WHAT IS THIS PART?
This is the steering-wheel airbag clock spring / squib coupling / spiral connection ring. It is mounted around the steering-column shaft directly behind the steering wheel.
The clock spring contains a flexible electrical ribbon arranged so that electrical continuity can be maintained while the steering wheel rotates. Depending on vehicle specification, this connection is used for safety and steering-wheel electrical circuits including the driver's airbag and associated steering-wheel functions.
TYPE: Airbag clock spring / squib ring / spiral cable coupling.
BRAND: Ford.
PART NUMBER: 2M51-14A664-AA.
COMPACT NUMBER: 2M5114A664AA.
MATERIAL: Primarily moulded engineering plastic housing with internal electrical ribbon/conductors.
CONDITION: Used automotive component – see listing photographs for exact cosmetic condition.
PARTS COMPATIBILITY CHART
The following applications are associated with part number 2M51-14A664-AA. Because Ford specifications can change by build date, equipment level and VIN, the number on your existing component or a VIN-based parts check remains the final compatibility test.
| MAKE | MODEL | BODY | YEARS | STATUS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford | Focus Mk1 / Focus I DAW, DBW | Hatchback | 1998–2004 | ✓ Part-number application – verify VIN / existing number |
| Ford | Focus Mk1 / Focus I DFW | Saloon | 1999–2005 | ⚠ Cross-reference – VIN confirmation recommended |
| Ford | Focus Mk1 / Focus I DNW | Estate / Turnier | 1999–2004/05* | ⚠ Cross-reference – VIN confirmation required |
| Ford | Transit Connect Mk1 | Van | 2002–2013* | ⚠ Part-number cross-reference only – VIN confirmation required |
*Wider applications are based on published part-number cross-references. Do not purchase for these applications without matching the original component number or obtaining VIN confirmation.
FOCUS MK1 HATCH ENGINE APPLICATIONS
Published compatibility information for the Focus Mk1 hatch includes applications such as:
✓ 1.6 16V petrol
✓ 1.8 16V petrol
✓ 2.0 16V petrol
✓ 1.8 Turbo DI / TDDi diesel
Engine size alone does not confirm clock-spring compatibility. Electrical connectors, steering-wheel equipment and build specification must also agree.
❌ DO NOT ASSUME THIS FITS
✗ Ford Focus Mk2 / second generation
✗ Ford Focus Mk3 or later
✗ Transit Connect 2014-onwards
✗ Any vehicle with a different clock-spring part number or incompatible connector arrangement
✗ A vehicle solely because the registration lookup suggests it is the same model/year
PART NUMBER OVERRIDES VISUAL MODEL SIMILARITY. If your original component does not carry the matching/correct superseding number, contact us before ordering.
COMMON CLOCK-SPRING FAULT SYMPTOMS
A defective clock spring can potentially cause symptoms including:
⚠ Driver airbag circuit fault code
⚠ Intermittent electrical connection while turning the steering wheel
⚠ Steering-wheel horn not operating correctly
⚠ Steering-wheel controls failing or operating intermittently where equipped
⚠ Electrical symptoms changing with steering-wheel position
⚠ Internal ribbon cable damage
These symptoms can also be caused by other faults. Proper diagnostic testing should be carried out before replacing parts.
WHY CHOOSE AN ORIGINAL-MANUFACTURER USED PART?
A used original-manufacturer component gives you the opportunity to replace a failed part with a component manufactured for the vehicle's original system rather than relying on an unknown low-cost reproduction.
Potential benefits include original connector geometry, original mounting points, vehicle-specific construction and established factory application. For electrical and SRS-related components, correct specification is especially important.
FITTING INFORMATION
Airbag systems can cause serious injury if handled incorrectly. Installation should be undertaken by a competent automotive technician following the manufacturer's repair procedure.
Typical equipment required
• Suitable socket and ratchet set
• Steering-wheel retaining fastener tooling
• Torx / driver-bit set as required
• Trim tools
• Torque wrench
• Diagnostic scan tool capable of communicating with Ford SRS systems
• Appropriate steering-wheel removal equipment where required
Typical replacement sequence
1. Follow Ford's prescribed SRS shutdown/isolation procedure.
2. Position the road wheels and steering wheel correctly before disassembly.
3. Remove the driver's airbag using the approved procedure.
4. Disconnect the required electrical connectors carefully.
5. Mark steering-wheel position before removal where specified by the workshop procedure.
6. Remove the steering wheel.
7. Remove steering-column trim as required.
8. Disconnect and remove the existing clock spring/squib assembly.
9. Ensure the replacement clock spring is correctly centred before installation.
10. Reassemble using manufacturer-specified fastener torques.
11. Restore the SRS system according to the prescribed procedure.
12. Scan the vehicle, clear applicable stored DTCs where appropriate and verify correct system operation.
Never rotate an uncoupled clock spring beyond its designed travel. Incorrect centring can damage the internal ribbon when the steering reaches full lock.
ESTIMATED GARAGE LABOUR
Typical workshop time should be confirmed by the technician after inspecting the vehicle. For budgeting purposes, allow approximately 0.75–1.5 labour hours depending on specification, access and diagnostic requirements.
| GARAGE RATE | 0.75 HR | 1 HR | 1.5 HR |
|---|---|---|---|
| £50/hr | £37.50 | £50 | £75 |
| £70/hr | £52.50 | £70 | £105 |
| £90/hr | £67.50 | £90 | £135 |
| £120/hr | £90 | £120 | £180 |
