The fuel filler door is the exterior body panel covering the vehicle's fuel filler cap and filler-neck recess. It provides a finished exterior appearance while protecting the filler area from direct exposure to dirt, road contamination and weather.
The RX-8 uses an interior fuel-door release system. The door must align correctly with the quarter panel and release mechanism so it opens and closes correctly.

🔧 FITTING GUIDE
Mazda's RX-8 workshop procedure describes the fuel-filler lid as a bolt-on component: remove the retaining bolts, remove the lid, install the replacement in reverse order, then adjust the lid so the panel gap and height are correct.
1. Park the vehicle safely and switch the ignition off.
2. Open the fuel filler door using the interior release.
3. Protect the surrounding painted quarter panel with masking tape or a protective cloth.
4. Support the existing flap while removing its retaining fasteners.
5. Remove the old fuel filler lid carefully.
6. Compare the old and replacement components side-by-side before installation.
7. Position the replacement lid and loosely install the retaining fasteners.
8. Align the panel so the surrounding gap is even.
9. Check that the exterior surface sits flush with the quarter panel.
10. Tighten the fasteners correctly.
11. Operate the release mechanism several times.
12. Confirm the door opens, closes and latches without contacting the surrounding bodywork.
