DOES NOT FIT — IMPORTANT
Not for Smart 450 CDI 0.8 diesel / OM660 applications. Not for second-generation Fortwo 451, Fortwo 453, Forfour 454, electric variants, or any petrol derivative outside the published combinations above. It also must not be ordered where the original coil has a different manufacturer number, electrical connector, high-tension layout or mounting arrangement. A 2007 registration does not by itself prove this is the correct part: only the specific late 450 applications listed above are covered.
WHAT THE IGNITION COIL DOES
The engine-management system triggers the ignition coil so it can transform low-voltage electrical supply into the much higher voltage needed to create a spark at the spark plugs. Correct spark energy and correct high-tension lead routing are essential for stable combustion.
Common signs of a failing coil
⚠ Rough or uneven idle  •  ⚠ misfire under load  •  ⚠ hesitation / loss of power  •  ⚠ difficult starting  •  ⚠ increased fuel use  •  ⚠ engine warning lamp or cylinder-misfire fault codes  •  ⚠ unburnt-fuel smell from the exhaust.
A persistent misfire should be diagnosed promptly. Continued driving with unburnt fuel entering the exhaust can overheat and damage the catalytic converter.
WHY CHOOSE AN ORIGINAL SMART / BOSCH PRODUCTION PART?
For an ignition component, exact electrical characteristics, connector geometry, mounting points, insulation quality and heat/vibration resistance all matter. This used unit carries the Smart, Mercedes-Benz and Bosch production identifiers visible in the photographs, giving you a concrete number and physical reference to compare with the part already fitted to your car.
A low-cost pattern replacement may be suitable in some applications, but quality and calibration can vary by manufacturer. Buying a serviceable used original-production component can provide a strong balance between correct specification, reuse of an existing part and lower cost than buying new. Savings vary by part and market, so always compare current prices rather than relying on a fixed percentage claim.
FITTING GUIDE — COMPETENT DIY / WORKSHOP
Safety: ignition systems can generate very high voltage. Do not handle or probe ignition outputs with the engine running. If you are not confident with diagnosis or high-voltage ignition components, use a qualified technician.
Typical tools
Socket/spanner set, ratchet and extensions, suitable Torx/E-Torx or fastener bits for the vehicle, trim/service-cover tools, electrical-connector pick where needed, torque wrench, diagnostic scan tool, labels/marker for high-tension lead routing and basic lighting. Use the actual fastener type fitted to your vehicle rather than forcing an approximate tool size.
General replacement sequence
  1. Park securely, switch ignition off, remove the key and allow the engine to cool.
  2. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's battery-isolation procedure if electrical isolation is required. Be aware that settings may need to be restored afterward.
  3. Open the rear service/luggage access and expose the rear-mounted engine area as required for your body style.
  4. Before disconnecting anything, photograph and label every high-tension lead. Lead routing must go back exactly as found.
  5. Release the coil electrical connector without pulling on the wiring.
  6. Remove the high-tension leads by gripping the boots, not the cables. Inspect leads/boots for heat damage, corrosion or tracking.
  7. Remove the coil mounting fasteners and compare the removed unit directly with this part: numbers, connector, output towers, mounting points and casing shape.
  8. Fit the replacement in the same orientation. Tighten fasteners to the Smart workshop specification for your exact VIN/engine — no universal torque value is stated here.
  9. Reconnect high-tension leads in their original positions, reconnect the electrical plug and restore any battery connection following the vehicle procedure.
  10. Start and test. Read/clear stored misfire codes as appropriate and confirm a smooth idle and normal road-test operation.
Estimated labour time: allow approximately 0.5–1.0 labour hour for a straightforward single-coil diagnosis/replacement. This is a planning estimate, not a manufacturer flat-rate. Corroded fasteners, damaged leads, restricted access or further diagnostics can increase time.
