The gas strut mounts at the rear hatch opening between the vehicle body and the tailgate. The Polo uses one support on each side. The pressurised gas spring counterbalances the weight of the tailgate, assists lifting, holds it open and helps control its movement.
| REAR TAILGATE — OPEN POSITION | ||
| LEFT GAS STRUT ↗ |
BOOT / LOAD OPENING Struts connect the hatch to the body at both sides |
↖ RIGHT GAS STRUT |
✓ Tailgate slowly sinks or drops after being raised
✓ Extra hand force is needed to open the hatch
✓ One side lifts more strongly than the other
✓ Hatch movement becomes uneven, jerky or noticeably slower
✓ Tailgate support becomes worse in cold conditions and does not recover adequately when temperatures rise
A tailgate strut is not just a bar of the correct length. Its extension force, stroke, end fittings and geometry determine how the hatch opens and is supported. This supplied unit is identified by the photographed 6R6827550A / 325N markings, making it much easier to match like-for-like than ordering from vehicle name alone.
For balanced operation, the two sides should have compatible force and travel. Where the opposite strut is also old or weak, replacing both sides as a matched pair is generally preferable.
1. Open the tailgate fully and have an assistant support it, or use a secure independent prop rated for the hatch weight.
2. Photograph the old strut orientation and confirm the old number before removal.
3. At each ball-socket end, use a small screwdriver to lift the spring retaining clip only enough to release the socket from the ball stud. Do not unnecessarily remove the clip from the socket.
4. Pull the old socket squarely from the ball stud. Keep the tailgate supported at all times.
5. Fit the replacement in the same orientation as the removed part. Push each socket firmly onto its ball stud until the retaining clip seats correctly.
6. If replacing the second side, repeat while the tailgate remains independently supported.
7. Remove the prop/assistant support only after both ends are securely attached. Slowly cycle the hatch and confirm it holds open and closes smoothly.

30-day seller warranty / return terms: please refer to the return policy shown on the eBay listing, which forms part of the purchase. Statutory consumer rights are unaffected.
Our strongest return-prevention step is fitment verification before dispatch. Compare the actual photographed number with the part being removed. If you are unsure, send the VIN and a clear photo of your existing strut/marking through eBay Messages before ordering.
Do not select a part only because an automated registration lookup or generic vehicle description appears similar. Production changes, body style and previous repairs can alter the fitted component.
Where this qualifying used item is sold under our VAT margin scheme / Global Accounting treatment, VAT is accounted for within the scheme and is not shown separately on the sales invoice. Please do not treat the transaction as a standard VAT-exclusive sale with separately reclaimable VAT.
