On the 1NZ-FE engine, the ignition coils sit at the top of the engine / cylinder head. Each coil pushes directly down over one spark plug. There are four cylinders and therefore four individual coil positions.

The engine ECU sends the timing/control signal to the coil. The coil then transforms the vehicle's low battery voltage into the much higher voltage needed at the spark plug to ignite the air/fuel mixture.
