WHAT THIS PART DOES

This assembly is the mechanical and electrically monitored locking mechanism that secures the rear tailgate or boot lid to the vehicle body. When the lid closes, the latch engages with the vehicle's striker and holds the panel securely shut. The electrical section works with the vehicle's release system and provides latch-position information used by the vehicle's locking / convenience system.

On an A3 Sportback, the mechanism is mounted inside the lower centre section of the tailgate, directly above the body-mounted striker. On compatible saloon or cabriolet applications, it performs the equivalent function in the rear boot-lid locking position.

FITTING GUIDE

General workshop guide only. Exact trim removal procedure and tightening specifications vary by body style. Use manufacturer repair information where available.

1. Prepare the vehicle.
Park securely, switch the ignition off and make sure the tailgate / boot lid is safely supported and cannot close unexpectedly.

2. Remove the inner tailgate / boot-lid trim.
Use suitable plastic trim tools and remove any screws or clips securing the inner panel. Work progressively to avoid breaking trim clips.

3. Locate the latch assembly.
The lock mechanism sits at the lower centre latch position where the lid meets the vehicle-body striker.

4. Disconnect the electrical connector.
Release the connector locking tab carefully. Do not pull directly on the wiring.

5. Record alignment.
Photograph the original latch and, where relevant, mark its fitted position before removing fasteners.

6. Remove latch fasteners.
Use the appropriate Torx / socket tool. Support the mechanism while removing the final fastener.

7. Transfer any required cable / linkage.
If your application uses an attached mechanical cable or lever, release it carefully and connect it to the replacement in the same orientation.

8. Install the replacement.
Position the latch correctly, ensure wiring is not trapped and reinstall fasteners using the correct manufacturer tightening specification.

9. Reconnect and test before installing trim.
Test manual closing, electrical release, remote / central locking function and the vehicle's boot-open indication. Never slam the lid repeatedly if the latch alignment is incorrect.

10. Refit trim.
Once operation is confirmed, refit the interior trim and all clips / screws.
