📍 Where Is the Rear Door Check Strap Fitted?

The rear-door check/limiter is a mechanical component positioned at the front, hinge-side edge of the rear side door. It operates between the rear door structure and the vehicle body near the B-pillar / rear-door hinge area.

As the rear door opens and closes, the check mechanism regulates its travel and provides the familiar resistance / intermediate hold-open action rather than allowing the door to swing completely freely.

Published Chrysler Jeep Liberty rear-door trim instructions use a Phillips screwdriver, panel-removal tool and pick tool. Depending on the exact fasteners fitted to your vehicle, the check-unit replacement may additionally require a suitable metric socket/spanner set, ratchet/extensions, torque wrench, non-marring trim tools, torch, protective gloves and a safe method of supporting/restraining the door.

General Replacement Workflow

1. Confirm the VIN, replacement part identity and required door position before dismantling the vehicle.
2. Park securely on level ground, switch the ignition off and prevent the rear door from moving unexpectedly.
3. For the applicable Liberty rear-door trim arrangement, remove the cover/screw behind the interior release handle and the armrest-pocket screw.
4. Carefully release the inner door panel with a suitable panel-removal tool.
5. Disconnect the interior-handle linkage and necessary door wiring, supporting the trim panel safely.
6. Carefully move the moisture barrier only as far as necessary, preserving it for correct refitting.
7. Locate the door-check assembly at the front / hinge-side edge of the rear door.
8. Secure the door before loosening the check mechanism so the door cannot swing and damage paintwork, hinges or surrounding panels.
9. Remove the door-shell and body-side check fixings with the correct tools for the fasteners actually present.
10. Withdraw the old component and compare it directly with the replacement: stamping, mounting centres, housing, arm/bracket orientation and travel.
11. Install in the reverse sequence using the correct VIN-specific workshop torque information.
12. Restore the moisture barrier, wiring, handle linkage and trim panel.
13. Slowly test the door through its movement and check for smooth travel, correct clearance and normal detent action before normal use.
