WHAT THE IGNITION COIL DOES

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A FAILED COIL

• Engine misfire, rough idle or vibration.

• Flashing or illuminated engine-management light.

• Loss of power, hesitation or poor acceleration.

• Difficult starting or, in severe cases, no start.

• Increased fuel consumption or fuel smell from incomplete combustion.

• Diagnostic misfire codes such as P0300 or a cylinder-specific P0301-P0304 code.

Diagnosis matters: spark plugs, injectors, wiring, compression, oil or water inside the plug well can produce similar symptoms and can also damage a replacement coil.

General replacement steps

1. Park safely, switch off the ignition, remove the key and allow the engine to cool.

2. Remove the engine cover or intake component only where required for access.

3. Release the electrical connector locking tab carefully; do not pull on the wiring.

4. Pull the coil straight upwards using the correct puller. Avoid excessive twisting or levering against plastic parts.

5. Inspect the spark-plug well for oil, water, corrosion or damaged wiring. Rectify the cause before fitting another coil.

6. Compare the removed coil with this item: part number, connector, overall length, boot and terminal position must match.

7. Push the replacement coil squarely onto the spark plug until fully seated, reconnect the plug and refit removed components.

8. Start the engine, confirm a smooth idle and scan/clear codes where appropriate. Stop immediately if the misfire or warning light remains severe.

Safety: ignition systems produce very high voltage. Do not disconnect or handle a coil while the engine is running. Professional fitting is recommended where diagnosis or access is uncertain.
