The latch sits behind the inner trim at the lower centre of the tailgate. When the boot closes, its jaws engage with the body-mounted striker and retain the tailgate. The latch is safety-critical because a worn, seized, misaligned or broken unit can prevent the tailgate closing securely. - Park safely, switch off the ignition, keep the keys accessible and support the open tailgate securely.

- Before fitting, place both units side by side and confirm part reference, bracket, holes, cable and connector are identical.
- Install the replacement loosely, reconnect the cable and connector, align it with the striker and tighten to the vehicle manufacturer's specification.
- With the tailgate still open, carefully test the latch action using a suitable tool; reset it before attempting to close. Keep fingers clear of the latch jaws.
- Test the handle, locking, boot-open warning and release operation repeatedly. Close the tailgate gently only after correct operation is confirmed.
- Refit the trim and perform a final road-safe closure check.
