⚠ Critical fitment check before ordering
The primary application is the SEAT Ibiza 6L / 6L1 hatchback, 2002-2008, in 3-door and 5-door form. Registration year alone is not enough. Before payment, compare your removed unit with every product photograph and match the part reference, electrical connector, release cable, bracket shape and mounting holes. Some catalogues carry the 6L shape into 2009, but a 2009 registration is not an automatic match.

✕ Do not order for

• Newer Ibiza 6J models merely because they are registered in 2008 or later.

• Any car carrying a different latch reference or connector.

Where it is fitted & what it controls

The latch sits behind the inner trim at the lower centre of the tailgate. When the boot closes, its jaws engage with the body-mounted striker and retain the tailgate. The attached release cable links the operating mechanism to the latch, while the connector / switch interface supports the vehicle's locking or boot-status functions according to equipment level.

The latch is safety-critical because a worn, seized, misaligned or broken unit can prevent the tailgate closing securely. Similar symptoms can also be caused by a misaligned striker, damaged exterior handle, broken wiring, failed switch, water ingress or trim interference, so diagnosis should come before replacement.

Common symptoms of a failing latch
Tailgate will not latch, bounces open or needs excessive force.
Boot will not release from the handle, key or remote command.
Intermittent boot-open warning or central-locking behaviour.
Grinding, sticking, repeated clicking or a loose release cable.
Visible cracked housing, corrosion, worn latch jaws or damaged lever.
Tailgate closes but does not lock, or locks but will not reopen normally.
Why choose a manufacturer-supplied pre-owned part?
A correctly matched manufacturer-supplied component was designed around the vehicle's original striker geometry, bracket position, cable travel and connector layout. That can reduce the need for modification compared with a low-cost pattern copy whose moulding, spring rate or connector detail may differ. A quality recycled component also keeps a serviceable part in use and can cost substantially less than a new replacement. Depending on the part and current new-part price, savings may sometimes reach around 70%; this is a potential comparison, not a guaranteed saving.
Fitting guide, tools & repair time
Estimated time: 30-60 minutes
Allow longer if the tailgate is jammed shut, trim clips are brittle, fixings are seized or diagnosis / alignment is required.
Typical tools
Plastic trim-removal tools; suitable Torx drivers for the fitted trim screws; suitable socket or driver for the latch bolts; small flat screwdriver or pick for the connector lock; ratchet and extension; torch; gloves; masking tape; and a torque source for the vehicle manufacturer's tightening specification. Fastener sizes can vary — inspect before starting.
General fitting sequence
  1. Park safely, switch off the ignition, keep the keys accessible and support the open tailgate securely.
  2. Where required by the vehicle procedure, isolate the battery negative terminal after observing radio, alarm and window-setting precautions.
  3. Remove the inner tailgate trim with plastic tools, releasing all screws and clips without forcing the panel.
  4. Photograph the old cable route, connector position and latch alignment before disconnection.
  5. Release the electrical connector and cable end, mark the latch position, then remove the retaining bolts.
  6. Before fitting, place both units side by side and confirm part reference, bracket, holes, cable and connector are identical.
  7. Install the replacement loosely, reconnect the cable and connector, align it with the striker and tighten to the vehicle manufacturer's specification.
  8. With the tailgate still open, carefully test the latch action using a suitable tool; reset it before attempting to close. Keep fingers clear of the latch jaws.
  9. Test the handle, locking, boot-open warning and release operation repeatedly. Close the tailgate gently only after correct operation is confirmed.
  10. Refit the trim and perform a final road-safe closure check.
This is a general guide, not a substitute for the vehicle workshop manual. Do not guess tightening torque. Professional installation is recommended where diagnosis, electrical testing or tailgate alignment is uncertain.
